Post-Up is a platform that allows users to create digital messages and drawings in their environment. The core of the experience is a mobile app that leverages the smart-phone’s accelerometer as a drawing tool.
Users wave their devices in space, almost as if they were using spray paint, to create images and words. When their image is complete, users can apply colors and effects to their line art and share their creations. GPS data allows the system to save the image in space to be viewed later by other users.
Posts can be viewed either through the mobile app which utilizes augmented reality protocol to display the post in virtual space, or on the website via a Google Street View mash-up. Both applications allow the viewer to enjoy the post within the context where it was created.
We envision this platform as an innovative tool which would promote creativity and connect users to their environments. The distribution and interactive properties of the web allow for sharing and community building. While we have focused on the core functionality, Post-Up has many potential uses such as: a form of nondestructive graffiti, a political activism platform, a tool to explore and learn about new places, or even a means to create clever scavenger hunts.
